Becoming a surrogate is a generous and life-changing commitment. To ensure the health and well-being of both the surrogate and the baby, there are specific qualifications that must be met. These criteria help create a safe and positive experience for everyone involved in the surrogacy journey.

While many women may want to become Surrogates, there are necessary qualifications to ensure the highest likelihood of success in this process. Please review the below to ensure you qualify to become a Surrogate with Shining Light Baby.

Gestational Carrier Requirements

• Age 21–41 (exceptions considered case by case)
• No more than 3 prior C-sections
• At least one full-term pregnancy and delivery
• Currently raising at least one child
• No more than 5 total pregnancies (exceptions may be considered)
• No more than 2 miscarriages (medical records required if applicable)
• History of healthy, uncomplicated pregnancies
• Overall good physical health

Medical & Records

• Able to provide physician contact information
• Willing to sign a medical release for record collection (OB, primary care, specialists)
• No sexually transmitted infections that could impact pregnancy or baby
• No insulin use in any prior pregnancy

Lifestyle & Legal

• U.S. citizen
• No travel in the past 6 months to high-risk Zika areas
• Not receiving government assistance
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license

Mental Health & Support

• Mentally stable with no history of psychotic illness
• Stable living environment
• Support from spouse/partner (if applicable)
• Spouse/partner has no history of psychotic illness (if applicable)

Commitment & Compliance

• Willing to take injectable medications
• Able to attend all required medical appointments (pre-, during, and post-transfer)
• No smoking, vaping, or illegal drug use
• No marijuana use during the process (even if legal in your state)
• No alcohol during pregnancy
• Will limit caffeine intake during medication protocol and pregnancy

Motivation

• Enjoys pregnancy
• Primary motivation is to help intended parents build their family
